Why this storm is a roof storm

Three things about the night of September 11 matter for a claim.

  1. Size. The warning threshold for "golf ball" is 1.75". Asphalt shingles begin to bruise at about 1"; at 1.5" to 2.5" impacts fracture the mat on most three-tab and many architectural shingles, and dent aluminum gutters, turtle vents and AC fins. That is the range spotters and residents documented in Converse.
  2. Motion. The storm moved southwest at 15 mph, which is slow. Slow-moving cells keep a neighborhood under the hail core for longer, so impact counts per test square run higher than a fast-moving storm of the same size.
  3. Wind and rain. Sixty mph gusts drive hail into northeast-facing walls, screens and windows, and lift shingle tabs. The two-plus inches of rain that followed found the openings the hail made. Interior water damage from that rain is part of the same claim.

Hail history around Converse

StormerSite's archive lists 66 hail reports within 10 miles of the Converse city center since 2004, with a largest report of 4.50", and the most recent prior report of 1.00" on May 2, 2025. That history is why carriers in this ZIP code look hard for a "pre-existing" argument on every new roof claim, and why the date-stamped evidence from September 11 matters.

The first 72 hours: a Converse homeowner's checklist

  • Photograph everything now. Hailstones next to a coin or tape measure, dents in gutters and vents, torn screens, broken windows, damaged fences and patio covers, your car. Photos carry the date in their metadata.
  • Stop further damage, keep receipts. Tarp active leaks, board broken windows. Reasonable emergency repairs are covered; "mitigation" is a duty under your policy.
  • Do not throw damaged property away. Keep broken screens, shingle pieces, ruined contents until they are photographed and, ideally, inspected.
  • Report the loss to your carrier, in writing. Reporting starts the statutory clock and is not an agreement about what the damage is worth. Note the claim number and the date.
  • Do not sign a roofing contract that "handles the insurance." Texas prohibits contractors from adjusting claims on work they will perform. Sign for the roof after the claim is settled.
  • Get an independent inspection before the carrier's. A public adjuster documents the roof, exterior, mechanical and interior before the carrier's adjuster sets the narrative.
  • Do not accept a first payment as final. Cashing a check does not close a Texas claim. It can be supplemented when the estimate misses items, which it usually does.
